Traditional British roast dinner

The interior of the "Toby Carvery Braintree" is designed to be modern and open, featuring a bright, friendly ambiance highlighted by wooden accents and comfortable seating. The central carvery area is the heart of the restaurant—here, guests can create their own portions of meat, vegetables, and sides, adding an interactive and communal aspect to the visit. There is also an outdoor area that can be utilized in good weather, providing additional space for guests who wish to enjoy the fresh air. The restaurant is family-friendly and offers amenities such as high chairs, while also being accessible to dogs, making it popular among walkers.

The menu revolves around the famous carvery offering, which centers on a selection of slowly cooked meats. Particularly popular is the Roast Lamb, which delights many guests with its tenderness and flavorful taste, often served with rich gravy. The Yorkshire Puddings are an essential highlight—light, crispy, and freshly made, they are the perfect complement to the roast. The Roast Potatoes are also frequently praised for their golden, crispy exterior and soft interior. For those seeking variety, there are vegetarian and vegan options like the Meat-Free Carvery, which impresses with a range of vegetables. For dessert, the Sticky Toffee Pudding tempts diners, a sweet classic that rounds off a meal with its warm caramel sauce and creamy consistency.

The option to order via an app streamlines the process and is utilized by many, while a delivery service offers additional flexibility.

Delicious all you can eat breakfast

Visitor experiences are largely positive, with the quality of food and inviting atmosphere often receiving praise. However, there are also critical voices: some complain that certain meats, like turkey, can sell out early or that food is not always served hot. Cleanliness is also not always consistently perceived positively during hectic days, such as when tables are not cleared promptly. Nevertheless, the restaurant remains a reliable choice for a traditional roast dinner that is both satisfying and budget-friendly.

Server today was Poon, she was absolutely brilliant and kind she was. She had a great laugh with my family and as always food was beautiful. Freshly cooked and tasty.

Best Toby Carvery of all I’ve visited so far and I travel a lot. Meats good and vegetables replenished regularly

Carvery was lovely, nice atmosphere, waitress was a bit slow between our main and ordering dessert then she forgot about us twice waiting about 25 mins to get dessert is a joke, only seemed to move if she had too, while the other waitress was buzzing around helping where she could. Would recommend it but if you don’t get sleepy head.

Great breakfast (eat as much as you like) beans and tomatoes could be hotter, fried egg yolks were hard or I’d have given 5 stars

We was put on the table that Home had knife and forks and a serviettes no Menus no condiments. The last Customer’s food over the floor under the table. The roast potatoes hard where there wasn’t cooked properly the lamb was really tough and chewy and my partner had a cappuccino and he said it tasted disgusting. Tasted like the machine needed a good clean we go Toby probably about five or six times a year and yesterday It wasn’t nice at all

We have come to this carvery many times over the years because it was way better than our local carvery at home, pretty convenient and the food is always good. The last few times we've been it seems to have gone down hill. More areas of the restaurant cordoned off, less staff, and less quality of service. We decided to give it another go 20th Feb'25, for breakfast. We pre booked our table, requesting a table near the serving station, my mum is elderly and struggles to stand/walk without an aid. On entering there wasn't anybody to greet us just an arrow to the till and a sign telling you to pay first, we've never done this before. We were then sent to find our own table, we were a group of five. We were told there was a large table in the window (the furthest point from the bar) - there weren't any large tables available. I went back to the the bar, where I was told ' well you will just have to move some tables and chairs together'. This made myself and my Mum feel pretty annoyed. So, I then sorted the tables rushing, a bit and flustered because Mum is standing and waiting and uncomfortable the whole time. The food was mediocre not upto its usual standard. Toast had run out, Sausages were overcooked, eggs were too. There was no service in the restaurant while we were there, and the guy behind the food area was very clearly stressed and unhappy. I raised a complaint in house and left my contact details, its been five days and I've heard nothing. We will not be visiting here again.

18 Feb 25 All the food was great. We prefer piping hot food, it was below hot. 14 Jan 25 Plate was hot Food was hot Meat portion good Tender meat Vegetables looked and tasted fresh 6 Jan 25. All food was excellent, but could have been hotter, it was just warm. 10 Dec 24 Quality of food is great. In our view it could be hotter. Real negative is peas. Your pictures on the wall show your peas as a vibrant green. They never look like that. Suggest you put out peas in smaller containers as they do not keep well under the heat lamps. If when changing them more often, throw the left ones away as they spoil the new ones coming out. 26 Nov 24 Meat and most vegetables were great. Food was warm not hot. 23 Oct 24 Overall meal was OK but not exceptional. Beef not as tender as previous meals. Peas again mixing old with new. 7 Oct 24 The meats we have are Beef and Gammon. Both are excellent. Extra choices on the vegetables always seen ass good. However the Brussels sprouts were hard and you still mix the old peas with new peas, maybe cost effective for you. It looks that you don't know what you are doing with presentaion and taste, which is a same when everything else is good. 2 sept 24 Ensure you have beef on the menu. You did supply lamb instead, which for me is second in choice due to the fatty bits. Mixing peas from almost empty bowl, that have changed colour with new peas - bad idea 20 Aug 24 Beef melted in the mouth, so tender and tasty. All vegetables cooked well except the peas. You cannot leave peas out under hot lights for a long period, they crinkle, go.a lighter shade until virtually white. Please review what you do to the peas. Else perfection. 22 July 24 Food and service excellent. In recent weeks you have been varying the vegetables, well done. Only problem that I could raise is the salt cellers, always blocked. Put in rice for capturing the moisture and get staff to check them. 8 July 24 Excellent food, and staff. Food quantity and quality was excellent. Only improvement is to change the choice of vegetables. You had on this occasion, removing sweet corn for red cabbage. Should do it more often. 29 April '24 Excellent food, and staff. However on this occasion the beef was bland in flavour. 12 March '24 Excellent food, and staff.Excellent food, and staff. It would be more prudent to have extra staff when giving a discount voucher. Yes not enough staff! Head office needs to organise better. 18 Dec '23 Everything was spot on Usually very good value for the money. Today's visit was all great except no aircon.

Not the best visit we've had there. The gent behind the carvery must have had a bad day. Most of the desserts sold out

Average experience overall. We had booked a table but upon arriving it was obvious there was no need as loads of room and free/clean/set tables. However, despite this for some reason the host was in a total spin as to where we could seat and after a couple of minutes deliberating he decided we should be sat at the smallest table in the restaurant in the midst of other packed tables, and that other larger tables were reserved. After he left we simply moved... but it was apparent this may have more due to reluctance to service other areas as other arriving guests were placed at the same small tables, all bunched together- when large areas of the restaurant remained empty. Not a great welcome. On a good note, our waitress was friendly and efficient and the carvery was fine. Dessert however was very disappointing. A Toby sponge is always a proper steamed pudding. What I was served however was just a small cupcake/madeline - you could still see the ridges where the cake case had been peeled off! Can Toby tell me whether all branches are now doing this? Not terrible, but not terribly good. Wouldn't rush back.

It's a toby overcooked bacon, hard eggs, stewed mushrooms, cheap pulpy tinned tomatoes (used to be whole ones), a "production line trough"
